Aerobics and Dance

Aerobics. Not usually what you’d call a competitive sport. Well think again. When you get a group of sixteen girls, with approximately 2 months to make up a routine and learn it till they meet their own very high standards, then things start to heat up. If you would like to know more about aerobics talk to Mrs Scott.

The 2005 team had another fine performance at the Causeway Open Dance championships at the University of Ulster. Of particular note was the senior aerobics team whose performance was the highlight of the aerobics section. The girls won the 15 – 18 age aerobics section retaining their title from last year with an outstanding routine choreographed by pupil Emily McWilliams.
In the dance competition Dalriada were also successful. Laura Blair and Kirsty Black won bronze in the 15 – 18 pairs dance section. Shelly Ward and Rebecca Lapsley also won bronze in the 13 – 14 age pairs dance section. In the team dance section for 15 – 18 tears olds Dalriada were awarded bronze. The competition was a very successful event with twice as many entrants as last well. The team was comprised of Kirsty Black, Laura Blair, Sophie Maxwell, Amy McConaghie, Amy Warke, Nicola Lapsley, Anna Burnside, Sasha-Lee Henry.

Hockey

There is a long tradition of hockey being played in Dalriada and the club has enjoyed some success in the Ulster Cup competitions which they enter every year. The 1st XI have battled through to the final of the Senior Cup on 4 occasions and emerged as winners in 1993. The school have also had other successes in the McDowell Cup and the Junior Cup as well as being winners of the Derry and Antrim Leagues at the various age levels.
A most notable claim to fame for the hockey club was achieved last year when no less than 3 ex pupils took to the field to play for Ireland. The skill and dedication of Lynsey McVicker (Captain), Angela Platt and Briget McKeever has been well documented and the school are justly proud of their “Old Girls”!
This year for the first time 3 teams have been entered in the Mc Dowell Cup competition, which is aimed at 2nd XIs.
Matches have been arranged for all teams, mostly on Saturdays, but also mid-week, and the players would welcome support from friends and family.

VolleyBall

Dalriada Volleyball does the triple at the under 16 Northern Ireland schools cup!

What a result for the Under 16 teams of Dalriada School. Their Under 16 Boys and Girls ‘A’ teams brought the cups home to Ballymoney for the first time in 3 years. The tournament consisted of 23 teams from throughout the province and this is the first time that the girls have won and the boys have not won since 2003.

The Under 16 Girls A team, which consists of a few Northern Ireland Youth International players, got off to a shaky start in the tournament but from then on they simply got better to defeat every opposing team. Their semi-final match was against the Schools League winners Lismore Comprehensive School from Craigavon and the final was against Portadown College who defeated us in the final last year. Our girls won the final convincingly in straight sets with excellent defensive work from Mary-Joy McCauley and Linda Hilditch. Catherine Toye, as ever, played an excellent game and the setting of Jillian Montgomery and Sasha Lee-Henry allowed consistency in attack. Team captain, Susan Lyons was a constant source of encouragement to the girls and her spiking and serving ability was unmatched on the day. It was no surprise that the coaches were unanimous in electing Northern Irelnad Youth International Catherine Toye as the girls player of the tournament. The team consisted of:

  • Susan Lyons(Captain)
  • Sasha Lee
  • Catherine Toye
  • Linda Hilditch
  • Jillian Montgomery
  • Mary-Joy McCauley
  • Laura Blair
  • Nicola Lapsley

The Under 16 Boys team easily defeated other teams in the early rounds including their win against league winners Craigavon. This gave them the confidence to face Larne Grammar in the final and the first set belonged to Dalriada from the start with Stewart Robinson serving with great power and accuracy which won a lot of points for the team and it is no surprise that he was named boys player of the tournament. The second set was a much closer affair with Dalriada only winning 25 points to 23 after coming from behind at 19 points! Captain, Geoff Scott played an excellent setters role in order to set the attack in motion for Andrew Wallace and Richard Gilmore. Johny Paul defended excellently the whole tournament and Andrew McKay, who had to fill the shoes of the absent Adam Watt, clearly got better as the day went on. The team consisted of:

  • Geoff Scott (Captain)
  • Richard Gilmore
  • Stewart Robinson
  • Andrew Wallace
  • Johnny Paul
  • Adam Watt
  • Andrew McKay

In an unexpected but welcome twist our Year 11 boys development team were undoubtly the surprise package of the tournament. In the first round of the cup they produced the shock of the whole tournament by defeating the mighty Campbell College from Belfast but were then defeated by Hollywood Rudolph Steiner. However this meant that they could still enter the Plate competition and they managed to squeeze past many teams in the Plate in order to reach the final which they narrowly won. This spells a great future for our under 16 boys team next year. The team consisted of:

  • Daniel Kirkpatrick (Captain)
  • Brendan Parke
  • Stuart Currie
  • Jeffrey Spears
  • Karl Cooper
  • Andrew Parke
  • Ben Brown
  • Conall Devlin

Statement from I. Walker (Teacher i/c of Volleyball):

The results round off a very successful season for both our junior and senior players, some of whom are now playing in the Northern Ireland Senior league for Ballymoney Volleyball Club. Our senior teams performed well in league and cup in the face of an ever increasing quality coming from other schools who are clearly developing the sport at and startling pace. Some of our younger girls coming through are simply amazing and many will follow in the footsteps of Catherine Toye, Emma Leighton and Sasha Lee-Henry by featuring in the national team squads. Many of our Under 16 schools cup winning team have been scouted to play for the Northern Ireland team in the future – possibly at the world youth games this summer. It is a testament to the schools commitment to the sport of volleyball and I would like to thank Anne Williamson, Stephen McCaw, Jonathan McClenaghan and our new coach, Lynda-Jane McCaw.

Coaching Developments

Congratulations to all teachers and pupils who completed their Level 1 Volleyball Coaching Certification………….

In an effort to promote the coaching of volleyball throughout the school 22 pupils and 3 teachers from Dalriada have recently completed their Level 1 Coaching certification in Volleyball.

The award will enhance the coaching by teachers in the school and we congratulate Mr Davidson (PE), Miss McCaw (ICT) and Mrs Kelly (Prep) for completing the award. We are encouraging our own pupils from the senior school to get involved in coaching so that they can help to coach the younger pupils coming through in volleyball. Mr Walker said that this is a good opportunity because many of our senior pupils have been helping in the coaching of volleyball in the Prep last year.
